Psychologist fees in the Free State, 2026

The median fee psychologists in the Free State publish for one individual session is R1 000, from 24 psychologists who publish a fee, read in the week of 19 October 2026. Half of them publish between R888 and R1 000.

For counsellors it is R450 (from 9 counsellors). Across all three categories together (psychologists, counsellors and psychometrists), the median is R950, from 33 practitioners.

These are rates practitioners publish. They are not quotes, and the fee you pay can differ.

Where these numbers come from

This directory lists 266 practitioners in the Free State. Of them, 33 publish an individual session fee: 24 psychologists and the rest counsellors or psychometrists. Of these 33 fees, 31 come from the practitioner's Psychology Today profile and 2 from their own website (read in October 2026).

The median is the middle value: half of the published fees are higher and half are lower. The middle half is the range from the 25th to the 75th percentile. Where fewer than 5 practitioners publish a fee, we do not show a median, because a handful of fees can swing it a long way.

The categories are not interchangeable. Psychologist, counsellor or psychometrist explains what each is registered to do.

Online sessions

Of the 266 practitioners listed in the Free State, 60 (23%) say they offer online sessions, and 201 do not say how they see clients. A listing shows one published rate, so ask the practitioner whether an online session costs the same. Our guide Online therapy in South Africa has the numbers for every province.

Medical aid

Whether medical aid pays depends on your scheme and plan. Many plans pay from day-to-day benefits or savings, some have a mental health benefit, and some conditions are Prescribed Minimum Benefits. If a practitioner charges more than your scheme's rate, you pay the difference. Ask your scheme before you book. Our guide Medical aid and therapy in South Africa explains the terms.

A published rate and a quote

A published rate is what the practitioner published when we read it. A quote is what they tell you that you will pay. Fees change, and assessments, reports and longer sessions are often priced differently. Ask before your first session.
